Hello Segment Riders!

Oh man, too much construction!!

Some were relieved, and all were spared a full effort up Bear (unless they wanted to!) Everyone who rode it were given 50pts, you're all #1 to me! =)

Honourable mentions to Dan B, Nicky and Dave B who all put in a bit of an effort and cracked 10mins!

Things were a lot more spicy over on Shaw, and lots of great times posted there!

For bike racing fans, there's no shortage of screen time today, I watched both the cross country races, with solid rides from Canadians (Carter Woods is from up island for those unfamiliar!) The women's Amstel race had quite a surprise at the end, and it was a bit of a shock not seeing MVDP factoring in the men's race. And there was the Track Nation's Cup in Milton, with several medal rides from Canadians!

And this upcoming week features....you guessed it - more hills! Including what might be our steepest ever segment! Keep on scrolling, brave warriors!

HOUSEKEEPING

Notes for the week:

Just a note for Keith B - your ride up Bear Mtn didn't quite go far enough to trigger the segment, but you were close enough and I've awarded you the points.

Reminder if your time didn't record (this week or any), please either tag me in your ride, comment on the Strava group post, or send me an email -- if you rode it, I can usually figure out a 'manual' time for you, but you need to let me know! 😁

06 <- THIS MANY WEEKS WITHOUT AN ERROR 🤣

SPONSORS AD

This week's sponsor is from the exciting new website DecidingFactorsApp.com!

We've already got lots of apps and programs to track our riding and fitness, but the REAL factors affecting your performance and race results are rarely tracked.

Which is why we're bringing you the DECIDING FACTORS APP!

Did you race with your lucky socks? Did you put on your HR monitor clicking the left side, or the right side first? What colour was your hairband?

It can be hard figuring out what exactly caused you to get that great result, but the DECIDING FACTORS APP sorts that all out for you!

Before each ride, and following each ride, you fill out a quick 250 question survey that prompts you to report all these details, and so many more!

What kind of cereal did you have? Was it soy milk or oat milk? Which shoe did you put on first? Did you put your shoes on first, or your helmet first? Which gloves were you wearing? Which hand did you put the glove on first? Did you put on your gloves before or after your shoes? Did you undo the velcro on your gloves, or just ignore it?

All these decisions make a HUGE different in your performance, and all the top pros know this, and track this independently, but will no doubt be signing up for a DECIDING FACTORS APP account!

Using our advanced algorithms, our app then sorts out which DECIDING FACTORS you've done when you had your best performances, and then prompts you to make sure you're wearing the right socks and put the correct shoe on the correct foot first.

Why take the risk? You could be ruining your entire cycling career, and not even know it! Is Mercury in retrograde again? The DECIDING FACTORS app puts that retrograde in retrograde!

Let us take the mystery out of the universe for you, and download the DECIDING FACTORS app today!

Use the hashtag #MyDECIDINGFACTORS for 20% off our app!

THIS WEEK IN RIDES

The A's

Once again we've got a returning rider with Samantha, who claimed the QOM on Shaw as well! Unfortunately the points were cancelled out by the Local Legend curse....but she was also the Early Bird, so back up 5pts! So much drama, I think this is the most we've ever seen with bonuses and curses on one rider! 😆

Lots of strong efforts with the guys, and Spencer flew up Shaw fastest with a time of 1:34! 🔥 Nicky was 6sec back, and Adam W claimed the final podium spot two seconds ahead of Dan B.

The B's

Maria had the fastest time this week, tho only 10sec separated them all! Nice riding by Renata to take 2nd, and Tania earned 3rd.

Travis F was once again the fastest, with a very impressive 1:46! Glen was three seconds back to claim 2nd, and Marc I made a podium appearance with his speedy time as well, beating out Travis O by one second!

The C's

With our C ladies, Lani beat Jane for 2nd, but Suzy once again took the top spot - it's starting to look like she's enjoying the climbing!! Bonnie and Shannon M also put in solid efforts!

Evan is proving to be a tour de force, and claimed the very familiar top spot! Donnie claimed 2nd by about 6 seconds ahead of Kit, all cracking the 3min mark, and Tyler G, Keith and Mikael put in solid times, as well as newcomer Peter F, welcome to the Segment Challenge!

BONUSES & CURSES

Lots going on this week! Sam claimed the QOM, but no KOM!

  • Early Bird was Sam
  • Renata hit the secret time of 2:45!
  • Socialite was Evan T, expressing his gratitude that there wasn't an effort up Bear Mtn (post a shot of your ride on IG or FB and tag @AboutTheRideCA for a chance for 5pts each week!)
  • The Local Legend curse was also taken by Sam!
  • No Yellow Jersey curse as usual!

Week #7 – Apr 15th – Apr 21st – Things Looking Up with Desmond & Delore

As promised, more West Shore hills! Desmond is a longer one, but not too challenging. But Delore may be the toughest segment we'll hit this season - it's STEEP. And apparently no female riders have gone up it, as there's no QOM on the segment! We'll change that this week.

Segment 7A Name: Sunheights Drive Climb
Deets: 1.35km, 125m elevation gain.
This is an existing segment, QOM is Mega Rath with a 4:58, KOM is Jay Lamoureux with a 4:00 & LL Joe Barrett with 3 efforts!
Link: https://www.strava.com/segments/4404979

Been meaning to include this one for a while, it's a solid climb, but not very mean. It's a strange neighbourhood tho, best just turn around and head back down, but you can find yourself a new adventure carrying on after the climb!

Segment 7B Name: Essential Oceana
Deets: 0.40km, 54m elevation gain.
This is an existing segment, QOM is none!, KOM is Tyson Sichewski with a 1:28 & LL is Andy Achuff with 1 effort!
Link: https://www.strava.com/segments/17598959

I think this will be the hardest segment this season - 54m climbing in 400m! Yow! Only 25 people have even ridden this one, and 6 in our group. I've ridden by this one on Wishart many times over the years, and finally checked it out in March....ouch.. Note there is a road crossing halfway up, but I doubt anyone will be going very fast and it's a pretty quiet road. 😭

Happy riding!! 🚵‍♀️

Updated on the site: as always Routing for this week: https://abouttheride.ca/victoria-segment-challenge/

There's a memorable gateway!
Had fun riding out that way with
Samantha and Julian.

Make sure you do your 'no construction' dance before going to bed!😂 This will be another fun week, enjoy the seggies!!

And in closing a little preview for Season 5: the theme will be 'Rider's Choice' - and I'll be setting up a submission form collecting YOUR suggestions for segments, and hopefully we'll get a bunch of good ones, and I'll structure the season around that. So put on your thinking caps, and I'll let you know when it's live on the site!

Safe and speedy riding all! 🚲

- Dave
