More speed overall this week, but kept a few bumps in the road!
Hello Segment Riders!

Howdy everyone! Bit of a wacky week, temperatures up and down, and I think rain surprised everyone on Saturday! And probably today, oh and hail.

I'm happy to see we're still getting new subscribers and people jumping in, welcome to our weird little group! 😊

HOUSEKEEPING

Just a few notes:

Now leaning towards leaving the Female category as-is, there's some bonus prizing that's being arranged that reflects overall finishes, and combining fields would botch that up a bit, so I'm planning to leave as-is.

The illustrious Dan Blackwell has agreed to swap to A as well, tho his brain says he's a B, his legs say he's definitely an A in this type of event. 😁

Newcomers Alan and Mike signed up as C's, but looking at their times I'll be swapping them up to B when I have a minute.

If there are any errors, omissions, issues, concerns, or anything else, feel free to hit reply!

SOUNDTRACK NOTES

Bopping away to Wet Leg, definitely my top pick for 2022 albums. Poppy, quirky, fun. And all day long in the chaise longue.

THIS WEEK IN RIDES

The A's

Claire is back, but sadly Lindsay had a bad tumble at the XC race last weekend, and will be out a few weeks.

Louis reigned supreme on Munn with a blistering 8:18, Dan was 20sec behind, and Damian not far behind that. The Burnside 'sprint' went to Damian who smoked the field with a 1:23, claiming the KOM as well! Louis and Harley rounded out the podium there. Neat to see some patterns appearing in strengths! (And I'll have to rejig last week's results moving Dan up, just a heads up.)

The B's

The B field continues to grow!

On the Female side, Justine had a perfect week, winning both segments and claiming the Burnside QOM, bravo! Laura and Maria were next fastest up Munn, and Laura and Jill were next atop the sprint segment, and let's all welcome Lara to the field! Jill also collected the Early Bird prize.

The guys have a few more riders to contend with (30 total now) and Munn let Travis show off his horsepower once more, followed by a surprised me, and Peter (who eased off a bit too early apparently). The Burnside sprint had a 3-way tie for the fastest time of 1:27, with Peter, Kirk and newcomer Spencer. I rode Tuesday which had a very favourable tailwind which helped me get 2nd, and Jon Clark claimed 3rd without that little boost!

The C's

Sadly no Female riders again this week! I know there are more of you out there, please join in! =)

The Open field gained another two riders, and they claimed top spots, with Alan and Mike seconds apart - and will be moved to the B's. Mikael claimed third (and soon to be first)! Over on the sprint Marc and Matt kept their feud going sharing the top steps, and Kit will soon see 3rd for his efforts.

The Secret Times this week were 10:01 and 2:06, and lots of close calls, but no hits.

Week# 6 - Apr 3 - 9 - Old Feeling, or Feeling Old?

This week we're back to Saanich, but we head out a bit further. East & Old Saanich Rds and Oldfield don't get much love, but have some great sections, so let's change that! Both segments are 'new', and feature much less climbing than the last few weeks.

Segment 6A Name: Make it a right on White!
Deets: 1.84km, 330m Elevation
This is a new segment, QOM is Rhonda Callender with an 3:19, KOM is Eugene Hahn with a 3:14, LL is Martin Choquette with 5 efforts.

Going straight on East Saanich makes for a pretty road section, but then you're stuck on Keating. This alternative route avoids that. The first portion is a bit of a busy road, but you should be able to fly along nicely in the bike lane, then there's a couple rights with a couple short kicks, and then becomes a slight incline for the final portion which ends well before the stop sign.

Segment 6B Name: Older and bolder
Deets: 1.74km, 45m Elevation
This is a new segment, QOM is Rhonda Callender with an 3:52, KOM is Eugene Hahn with a 3:08, LL is Andy Achuff with 1 efforts.

This may be another one of those roads you've ridden by a million time, but along with that hill on Brookhaven, it cuts you over to Old West Saanich Rd, which is a gem itself (fun rolling roadway), but we'll keep it relatively short and direct you back up to Sparton where you'll pick up some speed! Careful on that left turn, the road is pretty quiet, and you'll probably not be travelling too fast (after the hill), but be mindful on the turn.

Bonus Segment - Seabrook Crit
Link: https://www.strava.com/segments/31616978

There's a new crit in town! Actually it's an old crit course, which was in use in the 90s, but now it's coming back! This week I'm adding it in a 'bonus' segment, simply ride the segment, and you'll get 10pts! There are no other points affiliated with this segment. Be sure to come back this way April 16th for the VCL crit!

Happy riding!! πŸš΅β€β™€οΈ

Updated on the site: Week #7 Hints, and Routing for this week: https://abouttheride.ca/victoria-segment-challenge/

This photo doesn't do that final bit justice!

Not the most common starting point on Munn, but makes
for a slightly different experience out there!

You got over the hill, but there's still a ways to go..!

And that's it for this week, hopefully the weather calms itself for next week!

Safe and speedy riding all! 🚲
