Royal Bay Crit

LET’S RACE BIKES!

Saturday, August 2nd, we returned to this unique and fun ocean-side crit course in the heart of Royal Bay!

Scroll down for the 2025 Results, Report & Photos!

Brought to you by About The Ride Cycling, sponsored by Dockside Physiotherapy, and Cycles West as the supporting club, join us for some fast riding on mint tarmac in this new development area! (Even the news is talking about it!)

INTRO CLINIC & RACING

There will be a quick and informative Crit Intro Clinic at 10:15 for 3o minutes – all who sign up to race are welcome to participate, or if any wish to do just the Intro Clinic, they are welcome as well! (Important Note: if you don’t have a CyclingBC license, a $25 one-day license is required for the Clinic, and/or racing. If you purchase a full license later, this will count towards your purchase.)

ROYAL BAY CRIT LOCATION

Just up from the intersection of Metchosin Road and Latoria Blvd, this 1km course starts on Tradewinds Ave, across Quarry St, around the round-about onto Producers Way into a slight downhill, across Hesjedal Way, and back up Tradewinds, where there’s a slight incline to the finish line. It’s a rare left-hand turning course!

If not riding to the race, there’s parking nearby, either in the bike park or other nearby locations.

Strava ‘route’ of the course: https://www.strava.com/routes/3250557068144162786

Elevation is wacky on that one, the Segment looks much more accurate, but I’d say 4m elevation is even a bit high, closer to ‘flat’: https://www.strava.com/segments/37470213

Race Organizers 2025 Royal Bay Crit Report

This year featured a bit of a cooler and windy day, and 28 riders were out to race one of BC’s more unique criterium courses, including a few from Vancouver! As a little background, July dates were attempted, but other events nearby made that impossible. August 3rd was selected with the goal of a double-header of crits, with Windsor Park having been listed on August 3rd, but the day after we set the date, Windsor was moved to July 27th. 🤦‍♂️ I was also formulating an ‘Island Criterium Championships’ idea to tie the events together, but the VCL wasn’t interested (neither including this as a VCL event, or the Island Champs idea).

The day began with a quick Learn To intro clinic with six racers. I haven’t seen anyone else offering any kind of Learn To session on a closed course, so it was a very unique opportunity. (Riddle me this: how does anyone in this city/island/province actually get to learn some crit basics this safely?) Case in point: at the aforementioned Windsor Park, doing some warm-up laps, met a new rider who’d only done a few Tripleshot rides, and this B race was to be his first race! I gave him some quick tips, but the current ‘system’ is not at all beginner-friendly, especially for guys. One of my goals would be to try and improve on that.

Our first race was next, and featured a small C group, who stuck together until the final laps. Gabrielle took the W ahead of Daiya and newcomer Rose, and the indominable Jimmy Holtz relied on his wile to keep ahead of our youngest rider Cael.

The B group was largest, with 11 guys and 3 A women. Keith, our returning B champ, was off from the top, soloing away! I foolishly bridged up and mostly sat on for several laps until we were caught during a prime. We also had a couple women’s only primes which spiced things up. Keith sustained another solo run to the finish, and 17 seconds behind Chad won the bunch sprint just edging out Kimberly. Dan was our 3rd guy, and Mirtha and Abigail completed our women’s podium.

It was a similar situation in the A’s, Cooper was our returning champ, and he solo’d away early on, holding the chasing pack at bay the entire time! On quick scan he had as much as 60 seconds on the field (and laps were in the 100sec range, he might have been able to see the field ahead of him!!) Aiden Oliphant won the bunch sprint ahead of Carson Smith and Evan Russell!

Thanks to all the racers who made it out to this unique course.

I’m trying my best to make cool things happen..fun factor was exceptionally high for the day, but definitely some unexpected challenges from where I wasn’t expecting leading into it, and in all honesty the financial factor not-so-great. Definitely will have to plan differently in the future, perhaps will have to run it ‘Go Fund Me’ style to ensure there’s interest and enough capital to cover the event. I believe the course still has lots of potential down the road, and have other course ideas I’d like to try.

A huge thank you again to those who made the effort to be a part of this. 🥰

GRATITUDE

So many helped make this happen! First up, thank you to our event sponsor (and bike fitter) Dockside Physiotherapy, and Cycles West who were our supporting CyclingBC Team. Along with Cycles West, Goldstream Bicycles and Westshore Bikes also contributed to complete our $700 value prize & prime pool! And the City of Colwood and Royal Bay neighbourhood were very kind to host us once again. And it wouldn’t be a proper bike race without Patrick from Rebel Timing proving prompt and accurate results.

A number of volunteers also were critical, especially Chad Grice, Gabrielle Leung, Dan Struthers and Mark Haughey, helping with the lead-up to the event. They were there the day of as well, playing important roles, as well as Dave Bitschy, Roland Rabien, Bruce Tonkin, Kevin Chen, Caeleigh Marshall and Adam Lawrence who were our course marshals.

Thank you all so much for helping make cool things happen!!!!

2024 ROYAL BAY CRIT REPORT

It was a hot day, but we had 37 riders come out to try out the new course, including a few from Vancouver!

We started with the C group, where 7 toed the line to be the very first ever to race the Royal Bay Crit! A few laps in Caleb took a flyer, and solo’d away for six laps, but was eventually caught by Ethan and Edwin, who stuck together the rest of the race, and Edwin ended up winning the final sprint, followed by Caleb and Ethan.

Next up was the B group with 17 racers, and after several laps to warm up and get used to the corners, Keith took off and was off the front for nearly 20 laps, when the pack finally reeled him in (which was defended by two of his Wheelers teammates!) The group was whittled down to seven in the final laps, and with one final rip around the course, Keith took the W, with Phillip just behind, and a close 3rd, with Dan Stefanson just keeping ahead of myself at the line! Abigail was our top female racer, finishing ahead of Mikayla.

Finally we saw 11 A riders set off, and after some attacks we saw Cooper and Matt blast away from the pack, and the pair got close to lapping the field…and similar to what we saw at Windsor Park a few weeks ago, Cooper reconnected with the pack, and with his teammate continued to drive the pace, while Matt held steady just behind the field, eventually starting to lose ground. Fortunately he held on for a very hard-earned 2nd. That was an automatic win for Cooper, and his Red Truck teammate Caleb won the bunch sprint ahead of Orien and Chris.

It was a thrill to race and watch, thank you again to all who came out!

GRATITUDE

We have a really great community of cyclists, and they helped make this happen! Thanks to all who helped out, got the word out, etc.. But in particular a big thanks on the day to Stéphane Tran, Tracia Rosenbloom, Matthew Macleod and Peter Smith (aka Burgess) for coming down and spending a few hours on course to keep things safe!

And the most gratitude is for Glennon Rosenbloom (who also finished 5th in the B’s!) for making the course a possibility, and handling a ton of logistics and set-up, and hopefully this will be a course we can continue to use for the future! Watch this space for more VCL races at this location in 2025!

That's Bike Racing!
