Victoria Segment Challenge Final Report – Season 10

atr blog featured vsc s10 report

The Spring Segment Challenge kicks off our road season for 2026, and end up spending less time on our dirt-friendly bikes for a few months. We had a fairly soggy start, with some fairly rainy weeks, but we did get a few treats with some lovely days! Things kicked off on March 9th and ran thru May 3rd (leading into our Climb series!)

It was another 8 weeks featuring a wide mix of terrain, with lots of ups and downs, and neat new locations as well, including a pretty cool finale up Atkins, and then up and up more and more!!

Some quick stats:

  • Number signed up: 67
  • Number of people new to the Segment Challenge & ATR events: 19
  • Number in the Strava group: over 450
  • Number who rode at least one Season 10 segment: 48
  • Male:female split: 54:14

Special Recognition – The Hardcore!

Our previous record was 12 riders, and this season we smashed it with 16 riders who made it out every single week, and so I’ve got a special shout out to Jon B, Josh Durgin, Rizzi Balestra, Sam Preshaw, Travis Orr, Renata Troc, Sarah DeVries, Dan Blackwell, Greg Goforth, Kathryn TGreat, Bicycle Dave🇨🇦, Bill Ransford, David Robertson 🇨🇦 🇺🇦, Derek Kasper, Ken Trudgeon, and Tyler Galts, for this achievement! (And as usual I also made it out each week, but not sure if I should count! 😉)

More Neat Stats

Here’s a couple charts from our Season 10 sign-up as well (note we had 67 people sign up, but a few never joined in – hope to see you next season!!) Here’s some of those details:

Neat to see, 12 also participated in our very first season!

I also asked folks what kind of rider they figure they are:

Lot’s of all-rounders, which makes sense! Surprised how many didn’t know, wonder if they’ve changed their minds? 🤔 Feel free to leave a comment below! 😁

The Series Final – Our Overall Series Winners 🏆

Now for the IMPORTANT stuff. Well not really, but it’s still neat, and is a competition after all!

Due to the iffy-ness of the weather, I kept most segments closer to town, I believe the least attended week was when we were out by Brentwood!

We kicked things off on Amblewood, those who’ve been around know this is one of my favourite areas – so many fun potential segments in there! Then over to Strawberry Vale (aka Granville & Hastings) with a new longer and challenging effort. We returned to Robin Hill, then Old West Saanich, and to Royal Roads to celebrate the new bridge! Then we were near Brentwood to revisit a couple segments (hello Greg!), we visited Sinclair and Tolmie for the first time (surprisingly!), and concluded on a new Atkins segment, as well as the fearsome Langvista grind. Pretty darn good season if I do say so!

If you want to check out the Season 10 Archives, you can find all the segments we did here!

Props to all who took part, I’m grateful that you join us in this silly grassroots cycling series.

The A’s

Tina was our Female A champ this year, tho sadly uncontested! Hopefully we’ll see more speedy women out for Season 11, but appreciate Tina being such a good sport (and beating most of the guys too!)

  1. Tina Trumpy (150pts)

Travis Orr had a stellar start to the year, dropping some serious watts and logging some very fast times, and is our A Champ!! Sam Preshaw was extremely close in 2nd, also often topping the field, and once again I found myself on the podium. Josh D and Rizzi also had stellar seasons, keeping the competition tight!! So many great rides, it was a big group of 15, with several upgraded to A, and great seeing Jon B, John F, Evan, Dave B, Graham, Lorne, Justin, Joel W, Julian and Marco out giving their all!

Once again, our final A podium:

  1. Travis Orr (697pts)
  2. Sam Preshaw (686pts)
  3. Vegan Dave Shishkoff (668pts)

The B’s

Ann Campbell started off strong, but sadly we didn’t see her after Week 2. And Pippa came in late in the season and rode some seriously fast times, but in the end with top times and consistency our B champ is once again Renata, claiming the top step over the Sarahs! Great battles out there!!

Our final Female B podium is:

  1. Renata Troc (764pts)
  2. Sarah DeVries (681pts)
  3. Sarah Pullman (558pts)

Our B guy field was a bit smaller this season, but still many mighty riders, and Greg was the mightiest of all!! Dan B kept him honest however, coming back from injury, and Michael J rounds out our podium thanks to some great efforts! Just missing out were Teddy and Hugo, and great to have Scott H, Ryan T, Adam B, Joel C and David K out for a number of segments as well.

Once again, our B podium:

  1. Greg Goforth (748pts)
  2. Dan Blackwell (720pts)
  3. Michael Jones, KoS (607pts)

The C’s

Just two C’s in our Female category, and the blows were back and forth the whole time, with Julia and Kathryn constantly one-upping each other, but Julia missed the first week, and that made it too much of a challenge to overcome in the end, but still a great season for both!

  1. Kathryn TGreat (770pts)
  2. Julia Barron (641pts)

We had a very large group of C riders as well, but Bicycle Dave was indominable, not only riding fast times, but collecting tons of bonus points with Early Bird and Socialite posts as well!! (Lots of great vids!!) Derek was nearly 100pts down, but that doesn’t reflect what a great season he had, and Bill R rounds out our C podium! Tyler G was just 11pts down, and David R wasn’t far back. Great having Ken, James W, Kit, Mike J, Dan C, Clayton, the Hoffmeister, Tristan, Ben and Jimmy Holtz out as well!

Out of 15 riders, here’s our Top 3:

  1. Bicycle Dave🇨🇦 (828pts)
  2. Derek Kasper (731pts)
  3. Bill Ransford (706pts)

It’s been a blast tabulating the results and seeing everyone putting in their efforts, and there were so many fantastic stories, congrats to all for being part of Season 10!

Note in the scoring sheet the tabs at the bottom to flip between overall and individual weeks. If a PDF is preferred, simply click here! Here is the full link to the GoogleDoc. (You can view the Notes each week for the Bonus and Curse details, which doesn’t show up in the table below.)

Finishing Up!

Kinda crazy to think we’re already up to Season 10! Not too much has changed since Season 1 (less errors from me thankfully!), great to see how it’s holding up, and I’m still having fun finding wacky places for you to ride!

Thank you EVERYONE for joining along for the ride, and also another thank you to our series supporters who contributed many awesome draw prizes. (Be sure to let the shops know if you visit any of them!)

Given this is a blog post, please do feel free to add a comment below – it’s great hearing what you enjoy about the series, share some stories, and who knows, might inspire someone else to join in as well!

As this is a bit late getting published, you’ll already be in the throws of So You Think You Can Climb (ouch, rode Bear Mtn earlier today)! And we’ll be back with the Summer Segment Challenge in June, and it once again will be Rider’s Choice, where we’ll invite you to suggest segments to ride – it’s always fun to have you guys help shape the season as well, so put on your thinking caps!!

Until then, safe and speedy riding!!

– Dave
